Tips From An Expert: How Do You Start Off A Profile Essay?

When you are writing a profile essay, you will be writing a short biographical piece on the subject of your choice. You would interview your candidate and then write your paper on the information that you gained from your interview. This type of essay is designed much like a biography. You will write your essay describing the things that you learned about. You will get ideas about the person’s lifestyle and their physical attributes. You want your reader to “know” the person when you are through.

Starting this type of essay is not always easy. There are a few things that you want your introduction to do. After you have completed your interview and you are ready to start writing your paper, you will want to write a catchy introduction that not only sets your paper up but it also works to draw your reader in and make them want to continue reading. Here are some great ways to set up your introduction.

  1. You will start off with a little background on the person that you are writing about. You will give the basic who, what, where, when, and why information. That way your reader has an idea of who the profile essay is about.
  2. Next you will fill in the background information talking about the most important information first and following with the less important information. That way you will hook the reader in and make them want to read more. You want to give them the information they need to understand the rest of the paper even if they have never heard of the person that you have decided to write about. You can talk about what they do for a living, who they are in the community or World, and other pertinent information.
  3. Explain why you chose this person and that can become a great link to the body of the paper. It is a great way to set up the rest of the paper.

You will need to make sure to ask probing questions or some open ended questions for this assignment. An open ended question allows you to get more than just a yes or no answer. The question will allow you to dig deeper and that will help you have actual information to write your paper on so that you can write a productive piece.
