Deep in My Heart

MGM, 1954, Color, 132 minutes, ***½

Musical biography of Sigmund Romberg (Johann Sebastian Romberg, 1887-1951), one of the most prolific and successful American musical composers, with over 2000 songs to his credit and more than 80 musical scores. Ferrer's "Jazza-Do" one man show is unforgettable, as is Helen Traubel's singing. Traubel and Ferrer dance "The Leg of Mutton," Gene Kelly and his brother, in their only screen appearance together, "Go Swimmin' with Wimmen," and Jane Powell and Vic Damone do a beautiful rendition of "Will You Remember (Sweetheart)." Many other great musical numbers too. Don't miss it!

. . .

"While Broadway swings to the jazzy beat of ragtime, Romberg chooses to play the beautiful waltzes of his native land amongst the old world charm of 2nd Avenue's Cafe Vienna. When Anna Mueller (Metropolitan Opera diva Helen Traubel), the owner of the cafe, convinces the stubborn composer to try his hand at the raucous new sound, Romberg writes a hit song in no time at all. The musician produces one smash hit after another, eventually creating a hit show that takes New York by storm. While successful in his musical endeavors, Romberg must still win the heart of a reluctant woman. His amorous pursuit marks the beginning of one of the world's great romances.

Jose Ferrer gives a virtuoso performance as Romberg. Guest stars that include Ann Miller, Rosemary Clooney, Cyd Charisse, Gene Kelly and Howard Keel make the musical sequences a memorable delight. The masterful direction is by Stanley Donen of Singin' in the Rain fame. This is vibrant entertainment to make everyone's heart sing."
